NZ clean-tech business makes its mark

June 2012 NZ clean- tech
business makes its mark at the biggest UN conference in
history
ecoPortal, an
all-Kiwi information technology company, has made an
impression with over a hundred senior international
delegations at Rio+20 that wrapped up this week. They
presented the work they have been doing with the Auckland
Council to the delegates from ICLEI – Local Governments
for Sustainability, which is an association of about 1220
local government members from 80 countries.
“We have been working with the team at Auckland Council to help translate their vision of making Auckland the most liveable city by 2040 into a robust and engaging implementation plan to achieve real tangible outcomes like reducing waste and energy consumption as well as engaging citizens and businesses to take part in making the vision come to reality”, said ecoPortal director Logan Wait.
“The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, has emphasised the role of cities and towns in a sustainable future. With 50% of the population living in cities, set to reach 90% by the end of this century, it is clear that councils have a significant responsibility,” continued Mr Wait.
“193 countries have signed the agreement but the general feeling is it is underwhelming in its targets and it is clear that NGOs, local councils and industry have to take the lead,”
Twenty years ago the world failed to accomplish meaningful outcomes for sustainability following the Rio conference partly due to inadequate planning and procedures at a local level.
“Day-to-day operational glitches still cripple large and small organisations from achieving results. This is where ecoPortal makes a real difference.” Mr Wait said.
