Harrington's Breweries Crowned Champion Brewery of NZ

Harrington's Breweries Crowned Champion Brewery of New Zealand

Harrington's Breweries have been crowned "Champion Brewery in New Zealand" at the annual Sutton Group Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards.

This is another successful chapter in the Harrington's story, one that began in 1991 and has seen them grow to become a Christchurch brewing institution and one of the largest family owned breweries in New Zealand.

Harrington's picked up Gold medals for their Pig & Whistle and their Brewer's Reserve Baltic-Ler; Silver for Rogue Hop and the 2011 Anniversary Dark; and Bronze for Saddler Lager.

"It's our dedication to producing beers true to style, whilst still passionately seeking out new craft beer flavours that has led to this success", says Carl Harrington.

Head Brewer Mark White agrees. "I've been brewing here for two decades which says a lot about the brewery in itself, and I know how important it is to never rest on our laurels. We're a production brewery which keeps us honest, but as our recent Brewer's Reserve series shows we still have a few tricks up our sleeve and there's more where that came from".

Whilst previous years have seen a good deal of medals and trophies, including runner up Champion Brewery at the 2010 Australian International Beer Awards, this win is particularly significant in light of the Christchurch earthquakes. "It's been a tough couple of years no doubt", says Carl. "But the Christchurch brewing community has stuck together and worked hard, and the results from the Awards show Christchurch is producing some of the best beers in the country."

"It's amazing company to find yourself in", says Mark referencing previous winners 8 Wired, DB, Tuatara and Emerson's. "It's still sinking in, but it's already made the whole brewery more determined to keep making great beers. We'll continue to respect our history but this is an exciting opportunity to move forward and grow."

In its eleventh year, the Awards are run by the Brewers Guild of New Zealand who represents the majority of breweries in the country. The 2012 Awards saw over 450 entries, with 20% more local competition, and were peer judged by an international panel of industry experts.
