Million Dollar Donation to Support Bay of Plenty Community

The Managing Director of the Australasian Subsidiary of The Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A (MSC), Mr Kevin Clarke, announced today the establishment of a Rena Recovery Fund to distribute the million dollar donation promised to the people of the Bay of Plenty. “We feel that now the resolution between the owners of the Rena and the New Zealand Government has been concluded, it is appropriate to now proceed with our pledge of assistance.”

MSC have been in discussion with local representatives from the Bay of Plenty and an agreement has now been reached between The Mediterranean Shipping Company, the Western Bay of Plenty District Council (WBPDC) and the Tauranga City Council (TCC) as to the distribution.

The donation will be used to assist :

With the costs of cleaning up the Bay of Plenty waters and coastline to reduce the negative effects of the grounding of the “Rena”, including the spilling of oil and debris from the vessel;

The local iwi population who have suffered as a result of the pollution of the coastline caused by the “Rena” grounding;

With caring for local wildlife negatively impacted by the grounding; Local tourism related businesses that have suffered proven losses directly as a result of the grounding.

“We have a longstanding and positive partnership with the Port of Tauranga. With 250 port calls per year they are important to our business. Following the grounding of the Rena we wanted to support the wider communities of the Bay of Plenty with this goodwill gesture”, said Mr Clarke.
