Stocks pared afternoon losses and finished
mixed. Much focus was on economic data and earnings reports
in the United States and cautious optimism about the G-20
summit that began in Moscow today. At the summit, Federal
Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke said that economic conditions
are far from healthy, but he has hopes that the results from
domestic policies in the US will help strengthen the global
economy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished up 8.37
points, or 0.06%, to 13,981.76 on Friday. The Standard &
Poor's 500-stock index fell 1.59 points, or 0.10%, to
1,519.79 and the Nasdaq Composite Index lost 6.63 points, or
