Skytrek Soars to a New Zealand First with New Winter Hang Gliding Experience
Skytrek Tandem Hang Gliding & Paragliding is delighted to announce that it will launch a new winter hang gliding experience in Queenstown on 6th May, giving passengers a unique way to immerse themselves in some of the world’s most spectacular scenery.
Skytrek will be the only company in New Zealand to offer hang gliding through the winter season. Its new tandem hang gliding aero-tow flight, considered the highest and longest tandem hang gliding flight in the country, will operate from the Glenorchy airstrip, a stunning 40-minute lakeside drive from Queenstown.
Queenstown-based business owners Ian Clark and Shai Lanuel have joined forces with Trevor Leighton from Tasman Sky Adventures, Motueka, to create the trip.
Skytrek will utilise a specialised microlight to tow the tandem hang glider, with both pilot and passenger, into the sky. After climbing to over 3000 feet, the hang glider pilot will release from the tow line and the passenger can enjoy a leisurely 15 minute ride back to earth with breathtaking views of Glenorchy’s dramatic snow-capped mountains, crystal clear rivers and lakes and pristine national parks. This scenery has provided an inspirational backdrop for feature films such as The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Wolverine.
Skytrek CEO Ian Clark says it’s “very exciting” to be the first company in New Zealand to operate tandem hang gliding in such a stunning location and the only company to be able to offer hang gliding year round.
“This new business venture allows Skytrek to remain a year-round proposition for all visitors to Queenstown, and operating from Glenorchy will give people a unique opportunity to soar like a bird and experience the magic of the region’s epic ‘Lord of the Rings’ scenery.”
Skytrek was New Zealand’s first commercial hang gliding operator, pioneering the adventure sport in Queenstown in 1992. Owned by Ian Clark and Shai Lanuel, the company has flown over 60,000 passengers since and is the longest running hang gliding and paragliding operation in New Zealand.
