New Online Media Standards Authority to Launch on 1 July

New Online Media Standards Authority to Launch on 1 July 2013

New Zealand’s major radio and television broadcasters confirmed the “Go Live” date of 1 July for the new Online Media Standards Authority “OMSA”, which will oversee online news and current affairs content standards.

The Membership of the Complaints Committee and the Appeals Board will be announced at a function this evening in Wellington where the keynote speaker is Lewis Holden, Chief Executive, Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

Retired Court of Appeal Judge, Hon. Sir Bruce Robertson, Chair of the Complaints Committee said, “I was impressed by the strength, knowledge and diversity of the applicants for appointment to the complaints committees. The interview panel was able to put together a very strong team which will ably and independently oversee the regulation of standards in the online news media filling the gap identified by the Law Commission in its December 2011 report.”

OMSA Chair, Clare Bradley, said: “OMSA continues to enjoy the support of New Zealand broadcasters with the OMSA code and complaints process applying to the websites operated by all OMSA members. We are delighted to be able to provide the solution to the Law Commission’s “regulatory gap”.
