Sound Cloud Is Taking On Big Apple

Sound Cloud Is Taking On Big Apple

Hit German Internet Start-Up SoundCloud will next month open an office in New York. In charge is Dan Gerber, a sales vet from Pandora.

SoundCloud co-founders Eric Wahlforss and Alexander Ljung have created a platform with more than 35 million registered users. “It’s very much like YouTube or Instagram,” says Eric Wahlforss, who is also CEO, on how SoundCloud functions. “On Instagram, you share a photo; on YouTube, you share video; on SoundCloud, you share audio.”

Users of SoundCloud, which was founded in 2008, are now uploading 10 hours of sound to the site per minute. What’s more, it’s growing at a fast pace with 70,000 new registrations daily. The number of registered users could well pass the 55 million-user mark by the end of 2013. It is therefore the biggest audio distribution platform on the net, with a reach of more than 180 million people per month, equating to 8% of all Internet users.

Most leading social media enterprises are based in the U.S. while SoundCloud has grown its successful audio sharing platform from their base in Berlin, Germany.  In recognition of their hard work, in April 2013, the SoundCloud founders won the European Commissions Tech Entrepreneur Award.

The company, which already has offices in Berlin, London, San Francisco, and Sofia, Bulgaria, is aiming for the New York market because of better synergies with other start-ups, media outlets and various other industries.
