Smartpay urges retailers not to miss out on lucrative Chinese customers
Kiwi retailers are being urged to adopt the Chinese card payment system called UnionPay to ensure their businesses are attractive to Chinese tourists.
New Zealand’s largest EFTPOS provider, Smartpay, says local retailers that accept the Chinese bank card will be able to open their doors to over 200,000 Chinese visitors that this country hosts each year.
Chinese tourists are New Zealand’s highest spending visitors – opening their wallets to the tune of $651 million a year.
With Chinese visitor numbers expected to double in the next four years to 400,000 per year, Smartpay’s General Manager Operations and Strategy Marty Pomeroy says this a market retailers can’t afford to miss out on.
“UnionPay is often the only card Chinese visitors know and trust and they will seek out retailers displaying the UnionPay logo. So for businesses such as shops and restaurants in high tourist areas, accepting UnionPay is a smart move.”
This Queens Birthday weekend Chinese UnionPay executives will be at Parliament to sign an agreement with the New Zealand Tourism Board. UnionPay has issued more than 3.5 billion cards and the agreement will mean New Zealand will be promoted as a tourist destination to all those holding the card.
Smartpay is the largest New Zealand-owned and operated EFTPOS and payment solutions provider. Smartpay’s UnionPay Direct allows Chinese consumers to access their bank accounts in China.
To mark the new agreement and to encourage retailers to take advantage of the opportunities UnionPay allows, Smartpay is offering businesses a free two month trial of a UnionPay Direct EFTPOS terminal.
