passenger volumes (excluding transit passengers) at Auckland
Airport were up 0.5% versus April 2012. The increase was
despite the earlier timing of Easter and the later timing of
school holidays in 2013. In 2012, Easter started in the
first week of April, whereas in 2013 Easter fell in March.
In 2012 the entire school holiday period fell in April,
whereas the 2013 school holidays finished on the 5th of May.
We also saw strong performances on the Honolulu route with
Hawaiian Airlines’ first full month of service
contributing to a 61.6% increase in passengers on the route,
compared to April
2012. | 1.5% | International MCTOW for April 2013 was 1.5% up on April 2012. This was the first time in the 2013 financial year that international MCTOW has been higher than the prior year and was driven by new services from China Airlines (Sydney), Hawaiian (Honolulu), an up-gauge on the Emirates Melbourne route (A380) and the reallocation of Air New Zealand’s fleet (to North American routes) following the withdrawal of the Hong Kong to London service. |
| 59.3% | International passenger volumes were up 59.3% at Queenstown Airport compared to April 2012. This growth was driven by 30 additional international services to Queenstown (an increase in international flight movements of 65.2%). Of the additional routes 14 were from Melbourne (3,512 additional passengers), 9 from Brisbane (+1,752) and 7 from Sydney (+1,571). | 37.2% | Visitor arrivals from China were 37.2% higher than April 2012, outperforming the 12 month trend (+28.3%). The 208,257 visitor arrivals for the 12 month period ending 30 April 2013 was a record for annual Chinese visitor arrivals at Auckland. We also saw strong performance from other developing Asian tourism markets with visitor arrivals from Indonesia up 9.3% and visitor arrivals from India up 3.9%. |
