The Fiat 500 – Now So Cool It’ll Even Keep Your Drinks Cold!

The Fiat 500, both in its original form and its modern incarnation have become icons of cool, but while they are stylish and fun drive, they could not keep a 100 litres of drinks cold.

Until now.

SMEG, the household products company with a reputation for design and style just as cutting edge as that belonging to Fiat, has launched a new fridge, the SMEG 500 and it’s instantly recognisable as the front end of a classic Fiat 500. Available in Red, White and Green, the SMEG 500 holds 100 litres of drinks, accessible through two sliding doors in the ‘bonnet’ and, as befits the green machine on which it is based, comes with an Energy Class rating of A+.

The creation of the SMEG 500 is more than a marketing or design exercise, it also celebrates the connection in the two companies when, in 1957 at the same the Fiat 500 was being launched, Fiat used its expertise in mass production to help SMEG launch into the world market with its refrigerators, with the Italian car maker even producing the fringes itself to help SMEG establish itself.

“For me, creating the Smeg500, was above all a matter of personal honour,” says Vittorio Bertazzoni, Smeg CEO. “I strongly believed in this project as it pays tribute to the memory of my grandfather: when he founded Smeg, immediately after the Second World War, one of his first collaborations was creating refrigerators with Fiat. Furthermore, this partnership is witness to the amazing industrial competence of Made-in-Italy which gives life and body to creativity via one of its most symbolic objects”.

The SMEG 500 is produced to order and is available from this month via a special contact address, smeg500@smeg.it, with orders taking to months to fulfil. More information is available from http://fiat500design.com, which also has details of the Fiat 500 coffee table
