Exporter: Commitment Must Trump Only What You Wanted to Hear

Exporter: Commitment Must Trump Only What You Wanted to Hear.

Press Release: Leaders Review

This week, CEO of aeroplane exporter, Pacific Aerospace, Damian Camp, warned that it was tempting for potential exporters to ‘bet the farm’ based on first up market signals and assumptions, rather than play the committed long game.

Taking part in Leaders Review, a series of televised and online leadership vignettes,
Mr Camp chose to forewarn some of the ‘assumption traps’ experience by new entrants. Though, he added there was also a general assuredness that came about by the long term commitment to global relational and education programs.

Acknowledging NZ Trade & Enterprise (a series sponsor) as highly effective in providing a first up context for opportunity, it was still up to the exporter themselves to, “spend twelve hours on a plane and see things for themselves.”

“That first trip only qualifies you for a second, third or fourth trip…Don’t back markets or projects based on simply what you wanted to hear or see,” he says.

“Assumption is the mother of all stuff-ups.”

“It takes time to develop relationships, as well as time exporters to reflect whether they wish to commit further to a market.”

“Each has its own level of maturity and knowledge around particular supply industries, so effort and time needs to be put in accordingly,” says Camp.

“But never disrespect any particular line of enquiry,” he adds. “Deals can come from anywhere - after three weeks or three years of effort.”

Mr Camp is appearing as part of the regular Leaders Review TVC series on TV One for this rest of the week and amongst other series leaders until mid-July. He also appears in an extended online ‘breakout’ edition at http://www.LeadersReview.co.nz/
