Apparelmaster Christchurch cleans up with Green Ribbon Award

PRESS RELEASE

7th June 2013

Apparelmaster Christchurch cleans up with Green Ribbon Award

Industrial laundry franchisee Apparelmaster Christchurch was announced co-winner of the prestigious Green Ribbon Award for Small Business Leadership along with Pryors Apparelmaster (Auckland), La Nouva Apparelmaster (New Plymouth) at the Awards Ceremony held at Parliament on World Environment Day.

Apparelmaster Christchurch is a family operated industrial laundry business built around the owner’s commitment to sustainable business practices. Water and energy consumption is a key component of any laundry business and in 2011 Apparelmaster Christchurch commissioned independent quality assurance consultancy INSTEP to monitor its impacts.

The company has introduced proven technology from Europe to significantly reduce its water and energy consumption. It was the first to install the Revolution Towel Cleaning Machine in the Southern Hemisphere in 2009 and this year has invested in state of the art washer extractors, dryers and automated garment sorting systems which have lower consumption and will reduce further the environmental impact of running an industrial laundry.

The company is 20% more efficient than international benchmarks for water consumption in a laundry; uses 14% less energy than a typical laundry and in the past year reduced its carbon footprint by 5%. The company has also introduced biodiesel as an alternative fuel to power the boiler, when this was first implemented they were the first company in New Zealand to do so.

Alan Borthwick Owner of Apparelmaster Christchurch said that winning the Green Ribbon Award for Small Business Leadership is a major accolade for the company which celebrates twenty years in business this year:-

“We know that investing in the best technology has achieved major gains in efficiency but staff behaviour is essential to drive incremental gains and so this Award is for the whole Apparelmaster Christchurch team who has been instrumental in implementing our sustainability agenda. To know that our investment and efforts are valued and recognized nationally is external recognition of the values which underpin our business – to tread as lightly on the earth as we can.”

The Green Ribbon Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by organisations, businesses and communities to protecting and enhancing New Zealand’s environment.
