The TVNZ Sunday programme this week looked at housing affordability in Auckland and contains some comments from myself.

Lead Article – GDP and Surface Pro
Our economy grew 2.5% in the past year and as construction rises growth will accelerate. I also make some comments about a tablet PC I was lent to use. 470 words

Some of the Week’s Economic Data
Consumer confidence is strong and the current account balance has improved – but while the former factor will persist the latter will soon reverse as imports get drawn in for the construction sector. 272 words

Interest Rates
Fixed rates are going to rise it looks now that Fed. tapering looks highly probable later this year.  179 words

NZ Housing Market
This week I give a simple dot-point summary of the situation and reiterate that in a market constrained by supply prices will rise and the rises spread out of Auckland and Christchurch. These are early days for this housing cycle. 1,350 words.

Offshore
Nothing much this week beyond noting the Federal Reserve Chairman’s tapering comments and some US data. 261 words.

Exchange Rates
Tapering talk has pushed the USD up and the NZD down. Volatility will be at times extreme in the coming year as tapering gets underway – or not – then ends – or not.   239 words
