Southern region’s finest homes revealed

A new build and a renovation in Queenstown have been named this year’s top Southern homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Southern Region Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year.

Queenstown’s justbuilditnz scooped six regional awards, including the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the House of the Year and the Westpac New Homes over $2 million category for a home on Lake Wakatipu. The company also secured the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award, the Outdoor Living Award, Resene Sustainable Home Award and the Craftsmanship Award.

Leading Architectural Builders Limited was awarded the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the Renovation of the Year, as well as the Future Proof Building Renovation Award over $500,000, for a home at Queenstown’s Crown Terrace.

justbuilditnz’s build impressed the competition judges who said, “Constructed on a steep, tight site sloping down to Lake Wakatipu, this Queenstown build posed an array of challenges for the builder. A large home set over five different levels, it blends into the landscape with natural materials of cedar, schist zinc and glass.”

“Floors opens out onto spacious terrace and outdoor courts, making the most of the home’s stunning mountain setting and maximising outdoor living opportunities. With flawless joinery throughout the home paired with rare Belgian window and door joinery, the craftsmanship in this home is immaculate.”

“This home is an outstanding example of the builder making the most of setting and site to deliver a home that is well-deserving of the Supreme Award,” they say.

Judges said Leading Architectural Builders Limited’s renovation is “intriguing, functional, and quirky in the true sense of the word.”

“Exhibiting an outstanding example of construction skills in all respects, this Queenstown home sits proudly in the rolling countryside of Crown Terrace.

“An incredibly difficult renovation, the builder managed to replace all roof trusses in the rear half of the home without disturbing the roof line or cladding, as well as transforming one room and adding two more. This renovation is a beautifully crafted response to the needs of the client, seamlessly encapsulating and retaining the existing character of the home.”

The builders’ entries were recognised by members of the Southern Region Registered Master Builders and the local building industry at Ascot Park Hotel, Invercargill on Saturday, 6 July.

There were 18 Gold Award winners from the Southern Region which will now be assessed alongside Gold Award winners from the 10 other regions of the competition to find the National Gold Reserve finalists, which will be announced in August.

National category winners, Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for the Renovation of the Year and the House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.
