Kiwi Design Agency Beats International TV Giants to Top Accolade

Breakfast promo makes a meal of competitors

A creative agency tasked with showcasing the news has made the news itself – by winning gold in global marketing awards.

Beans & Rice’s collaboration with TVNZ’s in-house creative team Blacksand in the pre-season promotion for Breakfast 2013 was chosen over entries from Qatar-based Al Jazeera and Hong Kong’s Channel 10. It took out the top PromaxBDA Global Excellence Award in the Television/Video Presentation: News Programme category.

Announced in Los Angeles, the awards recognise the most compelling, innovative and eye-catching creative work from the entertainment industry worldwide and the judging panel included key executives from Sony Music, 20th Century Fox, Disney Channels Worldwide, CNN, HBO and National Geographic Channels.

Boutique Auckland agency Beans & Rice was commissioned by Blacksand, and directors Steve Goldie and Chris Alder delivered five concepts to brief that spearheaded the full production of a 30-second television promo for the season launch.

“We were thrilled to have them on board, it was a great partnership,” Blacksand executive creative director Jens Hertzum said.

“They came back with five really strong concepts. We work-shopped with them and they showed a real understanding of the creative concept and how to communicate with an audience.

“We loved working with them, they are easy to get along with, they had an instinctive understanding of what we were trying to achieve – and they have a nice sense of humour. When you have them around it’s easy.

“We were thrilled our collaboration has been recognised off-shore."

This was the first time Blacksand had worked with Beans & Rice, a creative shop formed in 2011.

“It’s a real honour to be selected amongst such world-renowned networks,” Creative Director Steve Goldie said. “Turning thoughts scribbled on paper into an end product that is so well received reinforces that we’re working with solid ideas from the start."

Design Director Chris Alder added: “We like to keep things simple and focused to a brief. Get the fundamentals right and the rest comes naturally.

Goldie has spent more than 20 years working in big agencies and Alder has worked in advertising and television arenas for many years. Their career paths crossed and together they formed Beans & Rice. Based in Britomart, they believe their small business has the skillset to pull off big scale ideas quickly and creatively.

“We only talk it up when we can deliver the goods,” Alder said. “Much of our work comes from word of mouth. Enough said."

Goldie agrees: “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we do take our clients and their needs seriously."

Ends.
