Fish & Game applauds riparian planting move

Fish & Game says the Government’s tax change allowing farmers to deduct riparian planting work as an operational expense is a very positive move towards helping reduce the burden of agricultural runoff into waterways.

“Conservation Minister Nick Smith and the Government are to be applauded for offering a simple, common sense approach to incentivise good environmental custodianship,” says Fish & Game chief executive Bryce Johnson.

“Riparian planting has long been known as a very useful tool to mitigate the impacts of runoff on waterways – there’s plenty of good information available to assist farmers including the MfE publication ‘Managing waterways on farms’ as well as that produced by regional councils.

“It is especially good to see something being done for small, lowland streams and not just a few iconic waterways like Lake Taupo and Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere.

“Fish & Game hopes the Government will keep thinking about ways to incentivise a transition towards environmentally sustainable agriculture.”
