Chamber to Host Mayoral Candidates’ Debate

Wellington Employers’ Chamber to Host Mayoral Candidates’ Debate

Media Release 18 July 2013

Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce is to host a mayoral candidates’ debate in the run-up to the local body elections in October.

The debate, which will be held in conjunction with The Dominion Post and Massey University, will on 12 September and will be open to the public. Further details will be announced soon.

Chief Executive Raewyn Bleakley said the Chamber and the business community, which contributes 45 per cent of the city’s rates take, was keen to play its part in the democratic process.

“This will be a great opportunity for the public to hear directly from the candidates on exactly what their policies are.

“Wellington is at a something of a crossroads economically, so it’s vital that ratepayers have the best information before they decide who they want to lead them over the next period.

“The city has huge potential and endless possibilities for growth, and council leadership plays a vital part in that future direction.

“We are delighted to be able to team up with The Dominion Post and Massey to play our part in that process.”

Raewyn Bleakley said The Wellington Debate at Massey University last night was a further example of just how passionate people were about the city, “and we need to harness that”.

She was one of eight speakers, and she emphasised the importance of business to Wellington’s future. She also told the debate that the Chamber remained firmly of the view that local body rationalisation and having the region speak with one voice was essential for driving the city forward.

“Wellington needs one voice and a clear vision. It’s crazy that we have just half a million people but nine chunks all making separate decisions on industry hubs, community facilities, and roads.”
