New Zealand Petroleum Summit Discusses Deepwater

PRESS RELEASE – 19 July 2013

New Zealand Petroleum Summit Discusses Deepwater

The second annual New Zealand Petroleum Summit is less than three months away, with organisers PEPANZ and Freeman Media announcing the agenda recently.

The event will be held in Wellington 18-19 September 2013. An additional workshop and the welcome function will be held September 17. The summit will discuss the key regulatory, commercial, environmental, policy and stakeholder issues that exist today and help attendees plan their course into the near term.

To date over 175 industry members have already registered; it is anticipated that 300 delegates will attend the two-day summit.

The New Zealand Petroleum Summit is a conference for the industry, by the industry. A key session in the programme is the Best Practice Opportunities panel discussion. Facilitated by consulting reservoir engineer Michael Adams of Rogers Adams Petroleum Consultants, this panel will discuss what companies compete on and what they should share. The panel will consider if we shared our best practices wouldn’t New Zealand, and the industry, be the winner?

Other key issues for the industry will be considered over the two day event, including the challenges and costs operators face today bringing petroleum exploration to the forefront. This issue will be considered by a Drilling Operations in the Spotlight panel discussion facilitated by Colin Finnegan, Co-Founder of specialist well engineering company SPD. Panellists including Richard Parkes, Managing Director of Kea Petroleum, and Andrew Jefferies, VP & GM Operations and Engineering at NZOG will look at topics such as resource constraints, new drilling techniques, and the new HSE drilling regulations during this not-to-be missed session.

On day two of the summit Lamar Duhon of Halliburton will present an international keynote address on the evolution of Deepwater – with the world’s growing demand for energy, limited access to reserves, and the large hydrocarbon volume potential of Deepwater reservoirs have made these reservoirs economically attractive. Lamar is Vice President of Business Development for Halliburton’s Asia Pacific Region and is based in Malaysia.

A number of other panel discussions have been announced including Commercialising Small-to Mid-size Gas Finds in New Zealand – to be facilitated by Aretê Consulting Principal Len Houwers; Landlords and Neighbours to be facilitated by SenateSHJ GM and Partner Tracey Bridges; as well as a Petroleum Leaders’ Panel on the morning of day one.

General Manager of New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals David Binnie will present a keynote session on what we can expect from the summer’s record levels of exploration activity and what the critical success factors are for long term growth for the sector in New Zealand.

The conference will be rounded out by a Political Leaders’ Debate – facilitated by the New Zealand Herald economics editor Brian Fallow. Panellists confirmed to date include Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman, and Labour’s spokesperson for energy Moana Mackey.

PEPANZ chief executive David Robinson says that the event presents an opportunity to talk about international best practice and working together with our communities. “The true potential of New Zealand’s petroleum sector is rapidly emerging, with players at home and abroad watching with interest as we explore what lies beneath,” he says. “Growing this sector brings with it great rewards, growing this sector together ensures everyone will enjoy its success.”

The event’s principal sponsor is New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals. Gold sponsors include PwC, Plant & Platform, Bell Gully, Schlumberger and Helicopters NZ. Todd Energy is sponsoring the
Welcome Function; ITL the Diversity in Our Workforce workshop and panel discussion; and Halliburton the pre-dinner Networking Drinks.
