Prison Fellowship NZ: Phil McCarthy as new National Director

10th September 2013

Prison Fellowship NZ appoints Phil McCarthy as new National Director

Prison Fellowship New Zealand has announced the appointment of Phil McCarthy as their new National Director starting 1 October 2013. Prison Fellowship Chairman Gregory Fortuin said “PFNZ’s DNA is unashamedly that of a faith-based volunteer organisation ministering to the needs of prisoners and their families. Over and above Phil being very well qualified for the role, he is totally aligned to our values and his commitment to this cause is beyond question – we believe this is a great fit.”

Kim Workman, founder of Rethinking Crime and Punishment, and a former National Director of Prison Fellowship, said that the Prison Fellowship Board and its volunteers will be extremely well served. “Phil spent over a decade as the General Manager of Public Prisons, and is a highly competent leader and administrator. More importantly, Phil has been an active Christian for many years, and has strong theological grounding. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is implicit in everything that Prison Fellowship does, and I can’t think of anyone better equipped to ensure that happens. We look forward to working closely with him.”

Phil’s successful public service career includes 16 years in Corrections as well as stints in the State Services Commission, Ministry of Energy and Treasury. The last 4 years has been spent providing consulting services in the Justice Sector as well as part-time Executive Director of the Robson Hanan Trust.

Phil has been married to Mary-Clare for thirty three years; they have three adult children and are active members of Tawa Anglican Church.

We are delighted to welcome Phil and are confident of his ability to lead us in achieving our mission.
