New CEO of mobile wallet company announced as momentum builds towards launch
TSM NZ Limited, the new mobile wallet company jointly formed by Paymark, Telecom New Zealand, Vodafone New Zealand, and 2degrees, is delighted to announce the appointment of Rob Ellis as its Chief Executive Officer.
Ellis, a Kiwi, brings to the role more than 20 years experience in the mobile, telecommunications and technology sectors, and has recently moved back to New Zealand after 12 years living and working in the UK.
He confirms that the mobile wallet, which is currently under development by TSM NZ, will be available to the New Zealand market in the second half of 2014.
“There has been a lot of anticipation about the arrival of our wallet and unquestionably it will be a game changer,” says Ellis.
“This is going to touch the lives of every New Zealander and we have to get it right. We’re working hard to get to market as quickly as possible but also ensuring that we deliver a world class and highly secure solution. Between now and the launch of our TSM NZ mobile wallet next year, you’ll see a number of leaner offerings available from our partners. These may, for example, involve one bank, or one card. It’s all part of the wider project to build momentum and understanding in the market and help to educate Kiwis about the possibilities of this exciting technology.”
Ellis continues that as with any collaboration of this magnitude and significance, it’s important to take the necessary time to do things properly.
“We’re building a platform that is open access. That means that all New Zealand banks, payments and other service providers - from loyalty to transport companies - will be able to create applications for digital versions of their cards to be stored in the wallet. Unlike most other local and international examples, this wallet will not be exclusive to one bank or one mobile network operator. Instead it will cater for the entire New Zealand market and where used for payments, it will link seamlessly and securely to your bank account, without the need to pre-pay or pre-load funds,“ he adds.
As well as Ellis’ appointment, TSM NZ Limited welcomes two new independent directors to its Board. Russell Hewitt (Chairman), a seasoned director experienced in the New Zealand technology landscape, and Mary-Jane Daly, a financial services veteran, who along with other board directors, will support Rob and his team to bring the mobile wallet to life.
