August 2013 Monthly traffic update

August 2013 Monthly traffic update

7.8% International passenger volumes (excluding transit passengers) at Auckland Airport were up 7.8% versus August 2012. The passenger growth was led by strong performance on American routes (+29.2%). The American growth was driven by additional capacity on all North American routes, the introduction of the Hawaiian Airlines service to Honolulu and improved passenger loadings. Visitor arrivals from the United States were up 8.5% on August 2012 and New Zealand resident departures to the United States were up 27.8%. 8.1% Auckland Airport has had a strong start to the financial year with total passengers up 8.1% for the financial year to date. Both international and domestic passengers have significantly exceeded prior year volumes, up 7.3% and 9.1% respectively. However, it is worth noting that this growth is against the 2012 financial year which was impacted by the pull-out of Aerolineas Argentinas, Royal Brunei and the Qantas Los Angeles route.
11.9% International travel by New Zealand residents grew significantly compared to August 2012 with an 11.9% increase in New Zealand travellers. The New Zealand growth was driven by increased travel to Australia (+6,000 passengers), the United States (+3,200 passengers) and Fiji (+1,700 passengers). The biggest changes in departures by travel purpose were in departures for holidays (+6,200 passengers) and visiting friends and relatives (+6,800 passengers). 47.4% Visitor arrivals from Indonesia and Malaysia were up 47.4% and 26.7% respectively, driven by holiday travel during the Eid festive season. This was the highest number of Indonesian visitor arrivals at Auckland in a single month and is evidence that targeted marketing campaigns on luxury websites and through social media are attracting Indonesian visitors to New Zealand.
