New Technology to Help Recycle Old Technology
Over 133,000 old televisions recycled so far using local IT solution
Wellington, 24th October 2013.
Wellington-based IT services company FINNZ has provided the IT solution to help the Ministry for the Environment recycle the nation’s old TV’s.
By extending the existing waste levy software to manage TV recycling data, FINNZ has helped the Ministry leverage its existing IT asset and achieve the timely and cost effective implementation of the IT systems necessary to support the TV TakeBack programme.
Yesterday the Environment Minister Amy Adams officially launched phase 4 of TV TakeBack in the upper North Island.
TV TakeBack is a programme to support
the roll out of the new digital broadcasting signal, and has
involved the Ministry for the Environment partnering with a
range of recyclers, retailers, and councils to help
encourage the responsible disposal of hundreds and thousands
of old TVs, reducing potential environment harm and reducing
the potential amount of material going to
landfill.
133,816 old TVs have been collected for
recycling so far.
The Ministry is driving this campaign because it is charged with “environmental stewardship for a prosperous New Zealand”, and has primary responsibility for the nation’s waste minimisation and management policy framework.
The Ministry also has an operational role in administering the waste levy paid on waste disposed of at landfill.
Maximising opportunities for the reuse and recycling of unwanted televisions during the digital switchover rollout was a logical extension of this focus.
