Five Gold’s, Six Trophies in Two Months

PRESS RELEASE: November 14th 2013

Five Gold’s, Six Trophies in Two Months

Boutique winemakers Johanneshof Cellars have ascended to the pinnacle of their industry, not once, not twice, but three times, repetitively starring in recent wine awards over the past two months; Five Gold Medals and six Trophies including three trophies for their Johanneshof Cellars Gewürztraminer 2012.

It started with the Spiegelau International Wine Competition, collecting four medals and three trophies, capping off the event with “Joint Producer” of the show. A few weeks later it was the New Zealand International Wine Show, another two Gold Medals and Trophy for the Gewürztraminer.

Just last week at the Marlborough Wine Show and another Gold Medal and Trophy for their Gewürztraminer 2012. All in all an excellent showing especially considering Johanneshof Cellars does not have the capacity of making a large range of one style of wine, they make one cuvee of each of their handcrafted wines and that's it.

The surprise of the Marlborough Wine Show was that of the 16 entries in the inaugural Marlborough Museum Legacy Award, Johanneshof won with the three vintages 2006, 2010 and 2012 Johanneshof Cellars Gewurztraminer. It had to be a set of three vintages at least two years apart of any one variety.

Joint winemakers Edel Everling and Warwick Foley say they are ‘over the moon’ with this latest accolade. “The Johanneshof Team is elated in being the recipient of not only the Trophy for Champion Gewurztraminer but also the inaugural Marlborough Museum Legacy Award. “In the 24 years we have been making wines at Johanneshof Cellars we have always aimed at producing wines of great harmony that ultimately have the strength to be enjoyed for many years after their release. The challenge in making a great wine is that it not only evolves and unravels over time, but also survives for years to come. Our training and work in Europe has taught us that the signature of a great wine lies in its ageing potential and we are thrilled about being recognised for producing such wines”.
