Vote for Garden Genie in the Global Startup Battle

MEDIA RELEASE

Sunday December 1, 2013

Vote for Garden Genie in the Global Startup Battle

Garden Genie, a new smartphone app designed to help people grow their own produce, has won the latest Auckland Startup Weekend (November 22 - 24) and is the only New Zealand team to compete in the Global Startup Battle of business ideas.

The team behind Garden Genie beat out stiff competition from 11 other innovative startup ideas in the contest that enables entrepreneurs to launch businesses in a single weekend.

Led by Jennifer Clamp, a Growth Programme Specialist at ATEED, the team of six is now campaigning to get as many votes as possible in the Global Startup Battle  http://www.globalstartupbattle.co), which runs until December 6.

The global competition invites startups from around the world to compete for votes to win a range of prizes, funding and exposure for their fledgling businesses.

Clamp says Garden Genie is an easy solution for people who want to grow their own produce but don’t have the knowledge to do so and are short for time.  On downloading the Garden Genie app, users are asked to provide basic information about their garden and what they want to grow.

They are then sent instructions for growing produce and reminders for when it’s time sow seeds, prune trees and for watering. Users can also purchase their gardening supplies through the app, and have them delivered to their home.

Clamp came up with the idea during a sabbatical from her previous job when she was reflecting on what she most enjoys doing and what is most important to her.

"Many of my happiest moments have been whilst sharing a meal with friends and family, and
I love creating and eating good food,” she says.

“Fresh food out of the garden has so much flavour that a simple meal can be one of the most delicious. It’s a pleasure to cook for people you care for, and even more so when you’ve grown the food you’re eating.

“Gardening is also something so special to share with children. Both my grandparents were keen gardeners and grew their own food, they were a real inspiration to me.”

Clamp had tried to grow her own garden before, but felt that she didn’t have the necessary time and knowledge to make a real go if it.

“There are so many components to consider, like how to sow the garden and fertilise it, where
to plant, caring for the soil and companion planting. It was quite overwhelming.”

Vote for Garden Genie at http://tinyurl.com/votegenie to help the only New Zealand startup team get through to the next round.

Voting ends on December 6.
