Verizon Digital Media Snaps Up Edgecast

A few weeks ago when Verizon Digital Media Services announced its acquisition of upLynk, I had the opportunity to ask Verizon about other likely strategic purchases it may have planned for the near future. Apparently it wasn't yet done with their holiday shopping list, as yesterday it confirmed a rumor circling this weekend that Verizon was acquiring Edgecast (a Content Delivery Network or CDN) for an undisclosed amount. (Ryan Lawler's Techcrunch article speculated the price was $350M, though this was not confirmed in the official announcement.) With this acquisition, VMDS picks up an additional six thousand customers including the likes of Hulu, Twitter, and Pinterest.
This acquisition is a perfect complement to last month's upLynk purchase - a technology I had previously mentioned was useful only if you owned a CDN. Apparently this was obvious to VMDS, as well, and it took my advice to heart.
