Survey backs Wellington’s IT reputation
Wellington’s reputation as the place for technology companies to be based has been backed by latest small business confidence survey, says Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.
President John Milford said an ANZ Bank survey showing that small companies in Wellington, and particularly those in the IT sector, are the most upbeat in New Zealand proved once again that the capital was the premiere location for the industry.
“The Business Micro Scope survey found that Wellington is now leading the way as our small companies play to their strengths in technology, smart industries and the creative sector, and that’s great news.
“There’s no doubt a lot of our success in attracting ICT start-ups and relocations is due to lower rental and operational costs, our compactness and easy networking environment, and our world-class data and telecommunications connections.
“The challenge is to make sure we have structures in place so those companies have the support and skills they need to continue their momentum.
“In that regard, the new ICT Graduate School, which is expected to open its doors in the second semester of next year, can’t come fast enough.
“That school will help address significant high-level skills shortages by feeding graduates directly into the industry, while at the same time providing innovative use of internships and research capability for our high-value high-tech companies.
“Wellington has the highest concentration of web-based and digital technology companies per capita in New Zealand, and we have 22% of all jobs in the computer system design sector, so we are perfectly placed to take full advantage of the skills the school will produce.
“Recent figures show the growth in our hi-tech sector is three times faster than any other region, and that’s why we must do all we can to support this industry.”
