T-shirt design inspired by whale cause

November 11, 2014:

Picton-based contemporary T-shirt designers, Indigo Greenlaw and Wills Rowe of The Paper Rain Project have created a limited-edition, hand-drawn T-shirt design inspired by the National Whale Centre (NWC) cause.

Social enterprise The Paper Rain Project specialises in unique, sustainable T-shirts patterned with designs inspired by nature and conservation.

“We think it’s great that we can offer something to our supporters that is created locally and from an enterprise that is totally in alignment with our values,” comments NWC Trust chair, Nick Gerritsen.

The T-shirt promotion is just one activity to highlight the forthcoming opening of the full-time operation of the NWC Display and Development Hub in Picton on November 15. The T-shirts will be available either directly at the NWC or through the NWC website fromNovember 15 to raise funds for the NWC Trust.

“The National Whale Centre campaign is very much in line with our values as a business. It is great for us to be involved with something that is local yet could have a national and even international effect on the knowledge and conservation of whales,” says Indigo and Wills.
The Paper Rain Project T-shirts are 100 percent organic cotton. They are made in India by fair trade organisation, Freeset, which helps women to leave the Kolkata sex trade by employing them to sew T-shirts. The basic T-shirts are screen-printed in Christchurch by hand.

The NWC Trust aims give a future to the past by telling the stories of New Zealand’s sealing and whaling history as well as current whale and dolphin (cetaceans) conservation efforts. The National Whale Centre will be a display and information hub linking up locally, nationally and globally with kindred organisations.

The Trust aims to build an iconic, interactive space on Picton’s waterfront for visitors to learn more about cetaceans and the local area’s whaling history through temporary exhibitions and events. The NWC’s Display and Development Hub is phase one of its development as a national institution based in Picton.
