Local Heroes Acknowledged in This Year’s Wares Awards
Last night the Wares Awards were held at Auckland’s Viaduct Events centre where the appliance industry came together to celebrate another year of success.
Each year, the Wares Awards is the highlight of the appliance industry calendar – and last night was no different, bringing together retailers in the appliance retail sector, to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of everyday New Zealanders.
Covering the breath of New Zealand, this year’s finalists came from all corners of the country, from Wellington, Gisborne and Southland.
One of the key acknowledgements of the evening was the Inductee of the Hall Of Fame. This year awarded to Gary Paykel, of iconic Fisher and Paykel brand, who in a video speech told his peers that “if he could live his life and career over, he wouldn’t change a thing”, and that one of his proudest achievements was the creation of the Dish drawer, a world first”.

With the retail side key winners were 100% Selectrix Southland who won Retail Store of the Year for under 400square meters, while 100% Heathcote Appliances The Base Te Rapa won Retail Store of the year for over 400square meter. Noel Leeming Lifestyle Appliances Wairau Park was acknowledged as Speciality Store of the Year.
The most competitive awards this year once again were fought out between Young Retailer of the Year which was won by Jonathan Walker of Noel Leeming Lower Hutt Queensgate, while Duane Thomas of Noel Leeming Tauranga was acknowledged as the Retailer of the year. Both winners will receive grants from Wares magazine to travel to an industry event to gain further knowledge in their field.
