National Wine Shows recognise Waipara Hills Aromatic Wines

Waipara Hills are quietly developing a fine reputation for crafting award winning aromatic wines.

Medals won by Waipara Hills for their 2013 Pinot Gris and Riesling is assisting the Waipara Valley’s reputation as one of New Zealand’s finest aromatic wine producing regions.

Recent success at three local wine shows; the New World Wine Awards, New Zealand International Wine Show and Canterbury’s International Aromatic Competition, includes nine medals for Waipara Hills.

Waipara Hills Winemaker, Simon McGeorge is pleased to be part of the increasing success for aromatics hailing from the Waipara Valley. “These recent awards are great recognition for both Waipara Hills and the Waipara Valley region, which is producing aromatics of a great standard. It’s particularly gratifying to see our Riesling win gold at the New World Wine Show. It is a wine which has been a quiet achiever of ours for many years”, he said.

2013 was a dream vintage for aromatics, allowing Simon and his team to express the character of the Waipara Valley. Initially there was a cool spring, which slowed down the start of the season, but a warm and stable summer gave the best possible conditions for fruit and flavour development.

The 2013 Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Riesling was placed within the top 50 wines, from the 1,165 entries at the New World Wine Awards and was one of only four gold medals awarded to a Canterbury wine.

Waipara Hills is looking forward to releasing their 2014 aromatic wines in the coming months.
