Project Management Maturity

Waikato District Council: Increasing Project Management Maturity

Hamilton, 19th November 2014 - Finalist at the Project Management in New Zealand Awards 2014, Waikato District Council (WDC), has increased its project management maturity fivefold supported by CAMMS solutions, becoming a leader across New Zealand’s public sector.

WDC serves its community with a vision to create a district that prides itself on economic excellence, local participation and sustainable communities. Understanding that effective project management is vital to delivering services, the Council sought a way to increase project success and address issues such as “scope creep”, capital works “carry-forwards”, sub-optimal planning outputs, budget variations and project delays. After reviewing over 400 solutions, WDC chose CAMMS Integrated Project Manager (IPM).

IPM has been used to “bring to life” WDC’s Enterprise Project Management Framework and supporting charter that acts as a guide for the effective and efficient management of projects across all work programs. Its integration with Council’s existing Finance, GIS, HR and document management systems has been an added advantage.

Manager of the Performance & Project Management Programme, Jarred Thomas says, “IPM offers a seamless approach to project management with linkages to finance - from task up to vision – which was what we were after.”

Since implementation Council, has achieved time savings of around 8%, which is tipped to increase to at least 15%. Reductions of time and costs in planning and managing projects is however not WDC’s main objective.

Thomas elaborates, “Managing and integrating the intangible side of projects is where the true savings lie. Not just cost and time savings, but also reputation, resources, political, environmental. We have built capacity for this within IPM.”

Joe Collins, CAMMS Managing Director, says, “Waikato District Council is a great example and leader across New Zealand through its achievement of increased project management maturity. CAMMS’ is proud to be a part of their journey.”

IPM enables organisations to manage all projects from commencement to evaluation, from a single, centralised location. Find out more about CAMMS IPM here.
