Mr Merlot does it again as Esk Valley reign at Air New Zealand Wine Awards
Esk Valley Estate added a new line to its own history book at the 28th Air New Zealand Wine Awards in the Hawkes Bay over the weekend. Esk Valley Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2013 took out the Champion Merlot, Cabernet and Blends Trophy, further confirming Esk Valleys reputation for this style of red wine.
Esk Valleys Hawkes Bay Rosé also continues to impress taking the only pure elite gold medal for its 2014 vintage cementing its place as New Zealand’s premier Rose producer.
Winemaker Gordon Russell comments:
“This is a very satisfying result for us. Making red wine at Esk Valley is very physical process involving all the team. To make a trophy winning wine in this volume that all New Zealand wine lovers can afford makes it even more special and recognises the special qualities of The Gimblett Gravels sub region from where the grapes were sourced. To also have received a Gold Elite Medal and be recognised as New Zealand’s best Rose for the year capped off what was a special night for us.”
The acclaimed Hawkes Bay winery has taken out the Champion Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot/Cabernet Blend Category more times than any other winery. This reinforces the excellent quality of fruit sourced from the renowned Gimblett Gravels, from where this wine originates.
