The hit Mexican restaurant Zambrero arrives in New Zealand

Media release December 8, 2014

The hit Mexican restaurant Zambrero arrives in New Zealand

The hit Aussie food franchise Zambrero has arrived in New Zealand. Three Auckland restaurants and one Wellington franchise are now open and this is just the beginning. In the next five years Zambrero plans to have at least 50 Kiwi restaurants.

Zambrero is Mexican with a mission. For every meal purchased at Zambrero, a meal is donated to someone in need in the developing world. Zambrero has already funded more than 3 million meals through this Plate 4 Plate initiative and the new Kiwi restaurants will fund many more.

Zambrero makes healthy, modern and fresh burritos and bowls (all the goodness of a burrito but without the tortilla) bursting with flavour. The guacamole is handmade, all our perfectly-spiced meats are slow-cooked and we offer a range of distinctive salsas and sauces.

Great care has been taken to ensure that anyone can eat Zambrero’s delicious and nutritious food. This means there are gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan options, as well as spicy and non-spicy sauces. Plus, the Zambrero website (www.zambrero.com/menu) lists not only the kilojoule content of every meal but the nutritional profile.

The mastermind behind Zambrero is Australian Dr Sam Prince, a humanitarian, philanthropist, entrepreneur and medical doctor. Dr Prince started Zambrero in 2005 at the age of 21 while he was studying medicine. His aim was to establish a successful business that also worked as a humanitarian enterprise.

As well as helping those in need, Dr Prince believes in fostering sustainability wherever possible. Packaging is made from recycled-sugar cane pulp – a 100 per cent biocompostable material. These packages will disappear entirely in a home compost heap within 90 days. Zambrero also uses rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate or otherwise known as recycled Polyester) for staff T-shirts.

In short, this is not your usual fast food franchise.

ENDS.
