Auction ring standout sells well for Trelawney Stud
Quality racemare Ruud Van Slaats delivered plenty of thrills for her connections during a sparkling career on the race track and she continues to make headlines through her deeds in the matron’s paddock.
The multiple stakes winner was represented at Karaka this year by her third foal, a showy bay filly that turned plenty of heads during her time in the auction ring on day one of the National Yearling sale series.
Presented from the draft of Trelawney Stud the filly is by outstanding Waikato Stud resident sire Savabeel and is a half sister to promising Melbourne colt Slumberland. Included in the filly’s extended pedigree is 2013 Karaka Million winner Ruud Awakening.
Slumberland’s trainer Danny O’Brien was amongst a host of enthusiastic suitors during the bidding war in the ring but once the dust had settled she had been knocked down to the $350,000 offer of Sydney based bloodstock agent Duncan Ramage.
Trelawney Stud’s Cherry Taylor was delighted with the result after having some doubts as to how the market would perceive the filly.
“We knew there were plenty of good judges who liked her as she had been very popular during our parades in the days before the sale,” she said.
“However until they actually go through the ring you just never know. We did put a very realistic reserve on her and we’re thrilled with the price she finally made.
“Her older sister Smashing has done a good job to date and it was good to see Danny O’Brien involved as he seems to have a good opinion of her half-brother.
“They can both run and this filly is a real athlete as well so we’re confident she will be able to do a similar job.” – NZ Racing Desk.
