Vision for the Crossing Unveiled

Another major boost for the rebuild of Christchurch with the unveiling of inspirational plans for the largest private development in the central city.

Carter Group today unveiled detailed plans for The Crossing retail and office precinct together with a car park, which Philip Carter says is a critical milestone for the project and for the CBD.

“The $140 million project will be the corner stone of a vibrant and world--class retail precinct that will be a draw card for locals and visitors alike.

It will give the central city a new heart and pump life back into the retail precinct as a whole."

Within the next few years, 15 000 people will be working within 300 metres of the retail and office precinct which includes The Crossing according to Colliers International Limited.

Philip Carter also believes that The Crossing is good news for other investors considering opportunities in the central city and wanting reassurance that significant progress is being made in the CBD.

The Crossing also supports key anchor projects such as the Convention Centre, which Carter Group is also involved with through the consortium with Plenary Group and Ngai Tahu Property.

“Carter Group has significant interests in the central city and the sheer scale of The Crossing development hasn’t been seen in Christchurch for many years.

There are always risks with a project of this magnitude but The Crossing and the $140 million investment is Carter Group’s way of also showing leadership and confidence in the rebuild of the CBD and a way of giving back to the city."

The Crossing development will cover the hectare block between Cashel Mall, Colombo Street, Lichfield Street and High Street.

It comprise of 14 000 sqm of retail and hospitality and 5000 sqm of commercial space.

Carter Group will also build a large new car park on the site.

The integrated 630 car park building will be a key feature of The Crossing development given how critical car parking is to a retail precinct and to the CBD in general.

The Crossing will feature laneways and courtyards to link a suite of retail stores and hospitality tenants.

The iconic department store, Ballantynes is linked to The Crossing with an air bridge at first floor level.

The development will harness the architectural features of the historic façade of the 1935 building and create an experience and environment that customers will want to explore.

With layers of 3--dimensional spaces connected with bridges, lifts, escalators and stairs, The Crossing will be a place of international quality and a place for people to meet.

It is anticipated that The Crossing will be open by October 2016.
