A Wellington based technology venture took open source thinking to the heart of its business and now boasts over 80,000 customers globally.
iwantmyname is a global domain name registrar that began as the brainchild of a pair of skilled migrants who identified the need for greater innovation in the field, after years of working in the industry in Europe. The business began in the depths of the financial recession, but grew steadily by offering an exceptionally clean and friendly user experience built on an agile open source framework.
"We began with a very open and informal approach to designing the company, and this ethos permeates our culture today", says Lenz Gschwendtner, one of the original founders. "iwantmyname not only employs open source technologies, but we also live and breathe open methodologies in the way we communicate and share decision-making across the business."
In keeping with the open philosophy, iwantmyname is supporting this week's Open Source // Open Society conference, bringing together the brightest minds in the worlds of business, education, government and technology, with a focus on leveraging open source thinking to create a better society.
Kiwi co-founder, Paul Spence said, "the conference aligns nicely with our business philosophies at iwantmyname and especially with our drive to be community-minded and connected".
"iwantmyname has a strong presence in the Wellington tech and start-up communities through both supporting events and mentoring budding web entrepreneurs", said Mr. Spence. "Open and collaborative thinking is part of the success story when it comes to nurturing high growth tech start- ups in our region", he says.
