2013 vintage wines “amongst the greatest red wines from NZ

2013 vintage wines “amongst the greatest red wines produced in New Zealand”

GIMBLETT GRAVELS® 2013 Annual Vintage Selection revealed

The sixth year of this initiative from the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association (GGWA), the Annual Vintage Selection serves as a unique snapshot of a particular vintage and helps to chart the evolution of GIMBLETT GRAVELS® wines on a vintage by vintage basis.

The highly acclaimed palate of Sydney based Master of Wine Andrew Caillard MW has been the independent selector for all six vintages, 2008-2013, inclusive. The 2013 selection was the most comprehensive yet, with a record 46 GGWA members’ wines submitted for selection.

On concluding the tasting to select the 2013 Annual Vintage Selection, Andrew applauded the wines as having “all the hallmarks of a classic vintage, with lovely aromatic complexity, generous flavours, supple textures and mineral length. The GIMBLETT GRAVELS WINE GROWING DISTRICT® is a significant emerging sub region. This year’s selection continues the theme of highly individual wines with a distinctive voice of place”.

Chairman of the GGWA, Gordon Russell commented “The excitement generated by the perfect growing conditions of the 2013 harvest meant this was the most anticipated Annual Vintage Selection yet. To have had Andrew Caillard MW with us in person has been a privilege, adding a global perspective and professionalism to this annual tasting. The 12 wines chosen as our Annual Vintage Selection are without doubt amongst the greatest red wines yet produced in New Zealand and showcase not only the skills of their producers but the special terroir of the GIMBLETT GRAVELS WINE GROWING DISTRICT®”.
