New Vehicles Sales Hit Record in June

New Vehicles Sales Hit Record in June

Total new and used-import vehicle registrations for the first six months of the year have grown by 11 percent compared with same period last year.

MTA (Motor Trade Association) Chief Executive Warwick Quinn said the latest NZTA figures show 140,475 new and used-import registrations compared with 126,236 for the first six months of 2014. Based on the current growth rate of 11% the total market will grow from 265,000 units last year to approximately 295,000 units which would be a new all-time record in sales.

New passenger car figures were up 5 percent while used-imported car numbers grew by 17 percent.

New commercial vehicle sales were up by 8 percent and used-commercials up by 17 percent.

“Over the last four years, there has been steady and significant growth in both the new and used vehicle markets. These latest figures show that pattern is continuing. The market continues to be buoyant. The June 2015 month was the strongest June for new car sales since 1989. For new commercial vehicles it was the strongest June on record.”

Toyota is still the most popular brand in passenger cars with its Rav4, Highlander and Corolla leading leading the sales ladder in June.

In new commercial sales, utilities continue to be the big sellers. In June, Ford Ranger continued to lead the market with Holden’s Colorado, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara rounding out the top four places. The Toyota Hiace was the fifth biggest selling commercial vehicle in June.

“A significant part of the June activity can be attributed to the annual Fieldays specials promoted by vehicle dealers. This year, farmers were experiencing mixed fortunes. The beef and lamb producers were doing reasonably well, dairy farming was experiencing a slight downturn, but the grain farmers were holding steady.”

Motorcycle sales surged ahead in the first six months of the year with a 21 percent increase over last year and a 29 percent increase for June month on month.

The largest selling brand was Suzuki with 96 new registrations, followed by Honda with 92, Harley Davidson 41 and Yamaha on 39 sales.
