Wellington Wairarapa Region’s finest homes announced

Wellington Wairarapa Region’s finest homes announced

A new build and a renovation in Wellington have been revealed as this year’s top Wellington Wairarapa homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2015 House of the Year.

Apteryx Building & Construction took out seven regional awards with their winning home, including a Gold Award and category win for the Westpac New Home over $2 million, as well as the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for the 2015 House of the Year. The company also won the Craftsmanship Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award, Outdoor Living Award and Interior Style and Finish Award.

Scotty’s Construction 2002 was awarded the Supreme Award for Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders 2015 Renovation of the Year, as well as a Gold Award and overall category win for the Mitre 10 Renovation Award $250,000 - $500,000.

The judges called Apteryx Building & Construction’s winning new build a stunning home built with outstanding attention to detail.

“This was a clever design on a difficult site. The end result was a fantastic, functional Wellington home,” they said.

“The builder has risen to the challenge of building in a marine climate with daunting wind exposure. The workmanship successfully integrated insitu concrete walls, structural steel framing, timber framing and cedar cladding.

“The clever design has wrapped the house around fit-for-purpose outdoor areas, with the home itself boasting an outstanding use of natural light and space to create an inviting open living area.

“This house is a well-crafted and top quality masterpiece that the builder should be proud of.”

Scotty’s Construction’s winning renovation impressed the judges, who called it “expertly crafted” and “a delight to experience”.

“This home was originally designed by renowned New Zealand architect Ian Athfield, who passed away earlier this year. The restoration of original details and retention of character was perfect, respecting the original design of this home,” they said.

“Extremely difficult site access, tight working spaces and complex detailing posed a range of challenges for the team. Creative use of aluminium joinery colours, timber joinery sliders and a well-selected palette of materials were highlighted through an exceptionally high standard of workmanship. This is an impressive renovation and a worthy winner of the title of Wellington Wairarapa Renovation of the Year.”

The results were revealed at a gala dinner on Friday 7 August at Te Papa Museum. The winning builders were recognised by members of the Wellington Wairarapa Registered Master Builders and members of the local building industry.

There were 14 Gold Award winners from the Wellington Wairarapa region which will now be eligible, alongside Gold Award winners from up and down the country, to become National Gold Reserve finalists, which will be announced in September.

National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for Renovation of the Year and House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.

The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, Master Build Services, James Hardie, GIB, Nulook, SafetyMate, Carters, ITM, Plumbing World, Resene, Westpac and Mitre 10.
