Explore celebrates successful first year on Waiheke run
Hauraki Gulf ferry operator Explore took on the competitive Waiheke run a year ago – and it’s still going strong with passenger numbers continuing to rise and plans for expansion early next year.
Since launching, passenger numbers have grown steadily with Explore now carrying a significant share of Waiheke’s many commuters, and both local and international tourist and day tripper numbers booming.
Also in this time a new boat, D6, was added to the Explore fleet to cope with increased demand and another new vessel is due to start operating early next year.
Explore CEO Kit Nixon says while the Waiheke run is highly competitive there was a big demand, especially from commuters on Waiheke, for an alternative ferry service.
“Explore provided commuters, as well as tourists and day trippers, with greater choice in terms of timetables. But also, our new boats have set the bar high. They’re comfortable, clean and offer people a unique travel experience that they’ve never had the chance to experience on the Gulf.
“It’s only a small thing, but customers rave about our on-board USB ports for charging their phones and other portable devices. It’s those sorts of simple things, as well as friendly and helpful service, that have enabled us to attract a loyal and solid base of customers.
“In the last year we’ve carried hundreds of thousands of people – from commuters and day-trippers, through to bach owners and tourists. We’re particularly grateful to our Waiheke customers who sail with us every day, and the huge amount of support they’ve given us from day one,” he says.
Explore celebrate its first birthday over Labour Weekend with music, entertainment and spot prizes on board the boats and on the wharf in the city and on Waiheke.
“We just want to thank everyone that has been on board with us for the last year, whether you’re a regular commuter or a one off traveller,” says Nixon.
Explore has more than 15 years of experience in the local tourism market and is best known for its fleet of America’s Cup sailing boats on Auckland Harbour, as well as tours and cruises in the Bay of Islands.
