BARISTACATS CAFÉ: AUCKLAND’S CENTRAL CAT CAFÉ

Almost 50% of PledgeMe target reached in first week; café ready to launch 1 December 2015

Thursday, 22 October 2015

Cat cafés have become an international feline phenomenon in recent years. Now the first cat café is about to land in Auckland Central. On 1 December 2015, BaristaCats Café throws open its doors on Exchange Lane at 95 Queen Street, right in the heart of Auckland’s Golden Mile. At BaristaCats, Aucklanders will be able to share the company of more than ten friendly felines (names to be gradually revealed online before December) while enjoying excellent coffee, delicious sandwiches and other tasty nibbles – making BaristaCats the purrfect place to chill out with some furry friends.

The story of BaristaCats Café

Cat cafés have taken the world by storm over the past few years, opening everywhere from Sydney to Paris, London to Tokyo. Proprietor Julia Whitehead, a lawyer and long-time cat lover originally from Christchurch, fell in love with cat cafés herself on a visit to Thailand in 2014. To bring the same magic experience to New Zealand, Julia has assembled a colourful cast of cats who can’t wait to be introduced to the Auckland public: lucky they’ve only got six more weeks to wait!

PledgeMe Campaign

To raise final funds for launch in December, the BaristaCats PledgeMe campaign went live on Friday 16 October. Within the first 12 hours, BaristaCats had raised nearly 50% of its $15,000 target from a total of 26 pledgers, with an average pledge of around $250. With just six weeks now until launch, BaristaCats needs the support of the public to close in on the final crowdfunding target and realise our vision.

About BaristaCats Café

BaristaCats is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable space for cats and humans alike. We have worked closely with Auckland Council, MPI and the SPCA to ensure the café is suitable for cats to occupy the same area as customers enjoying their food and coffee, giving BaristaCats a unique “shared space” atmosphere. The café has been carefully designed to provide great spaces for cats and customers to interact, with both an open-plan dining space and an adjoining relaxed “lounge space” in which patrons can get up close and personal with BaristaCats’ tabbies.

Located just a short walk from Britomart and right in the centre of the Auckland “Engine Room”, BaristaCats will be supremely accessible to cat lovers of all stripes. Indeed, the choice to locate BaristaCats in Auckland Central reflects the ever-increasing numbers of apartment-dwellers, office workers, shoppers, students, families, tourists and even cruise-ship visitors who now choose to live, work and play in the central city, many of whom do not have the space or the ability to keep their own pets.

BaristaCats will be available for group hire, corporate events, parties and other special occasions on demand.
