Kiwi coffee company spearheads school composting programme

Kiwi coffee company spearheads school composting programme

Shaky Isles pledge fund launches NZ home subscription coffee service

Shaky Isles Coffee Co. this week launches its development of their nation-wide coffee subscription service where the customer can have freshly roasted and ground coffee delivered right to their doorstep. A trait unique to the Shaky Isles subscription, customers will be able to dictate their own delivery cycle set to any day and regularity, rather than a delivery cycle set by the coffee company.

The New Zealand company, which has five locations in Auckland is looking at raising $40,000 over the period of the pledge in order to capitalise the startup of the home subscription model, but also as a platform for its ambition to educate NZ kids on food composting and to reduce its own environmental impact.

Lending a hand to the venture, Hungry Bins will supply portable worm farms that process 2kg of waste each day, providing rich compost for fertilising and feeding plants. For every package of subscription coffee sold, Shaky Isles will put 20 cents towards putting a hungry bin into participating New Zealand schools.

Shaky Isles group owner Sam Ansley says, “As a Kiwi company we are passionate about both protecting the environment we live in, but also in educating kids about the value of composting and reducing waste. While all of our Shaky Isles takeaway cups, lids and carriers are fully compostable, we often see them thrown into the general rubbish bins. Given that over a third of all landfill waste in NZ is food waste, this pledge is not just about raising awareness but actually doing something about reducing that waste.”

In addition to the schools campaign, the Shaky Isles café will be putting its money where its mouth is and putting a suite of Hungry bins into its Kingsland location to compost its own café food waste. They will also build a rooftop garden on top of the flat-roofed café and use their fresh compost to fertilise and grow vegetables and herbs for its own cafes as well as provide a real world example for schools to emulate.

The fundraiser launches in October and orders for the new Shaky Isles home coffee subscription service will be avaliabile for home delivery from Feb 2016 at www.shakyisles.co.nz
