thl is proud to announce the December opening of Waitomo Caves Homestead, an exciting venue providing visitors and the local community a gateway to the Waitomo area and the perfect pit stop for travellers mid-journey Located on State Highway 3 prior to the Waitomo turnoff, Waitomo Caves Homestead (previously known as The Big Apple Café) is due to officially open in December.
Acquired by thl in September 2015, refurbishment work is well underway with major redevelopment and a complete transformation planned.
Grant Webster, CEO of thl, says: “Waitomo Caves Homestead will provide a welcome to tourists from around the world to this very special area.”
Waitomo Caves Homestead will serve a range of delicious food and beverages with a refurbished new restaurant offering open air and inside dining options – for individuals, families and larger groups. The restaurant will cater for around 300 people and offer a range of services for groups and independent travellers. The menu has been designed to appeal to the diverse range of visitors who visit the caves area. There will be a sun-drenched deck and garden view as well as fully refurbished indoor areas.
“Our restaurant and bar will provide the perfect stop for travellers, who can relax and unwind, taking a well-earned break from the road,” continues Grant.
Set in an authentic rural setting, Waitomo Caves Homestead was originally a farm and orchard, a history that is reflected in the new brand identity.
The new facility will also provide a gift shop facility selling a broad range of souvenirs, beauty, health and wellbeing products and selected homewares – reflecting the best of the Waitomo region.

Waitomo Caves Homestead will open in early December.
