Office of the Electricity and Gas Complaints Commissioner

Office of the Electricity and Gas Complaints Commissioner –
best small workplace for 2015

The Office of the Electricity and Gas Complaints Commissioner has won the small business category in the IBM Kenexa Best Workplaces Awards 2015, announced in Auckland last night.

Commissioner Judi Jones accepted the award on behalf of the staff.

“Creating a great work environment and office culture enables us to deliver excellent service to those we work with,” Ms Jones says. “I am fortunate to have such a great group of people around me.”

The EGCC won the small business category in 2011 and has been a finalist each year since then. "We have and will continue to participate in the survey because it is a great way of taking the pulse of the workplace," she said, "the results show us what we are doing well and where we need to improve if we want to recruit and keep great staff,” Ms Jones says.

“Telling friends and family you work in complaint resolution is not a conversation starter at dinner parties, so we work hard at creating and preserving an office culture where people feel a sense of purpose and get satisfaction from their work,” Ms Jones says.

The EGCC offers a free and independent service for resolving complaints about electricity and gas companies (including LPG).

The Scheme was set up in October 2001 as a self-regulatory industry scheme for the electricity industry. In 2005 the Scheme expanded to include complaints about gas companies and in 2014 the Scheme expanded again to include jurisdiction over complaints about LPG cylinders (over 15 kg).

The Scheme has over 200 members and in the 2014-15 year received 3,655 complaints from consumers and businesses, a 77% increase from the 2013-14 year.

The IBM Kenexa Best Workplaces Survey is New Zealand’s largest annual workplace climate-employee engagement survey.
