Helping international students and boosting the economy

Helping international students and boosting the New Zealand economy

Intern NZ is an organisation that facilitates unpaid internships for overseas tertiary students that require work experience to complete their qualifications. Internships are in all industry sectors and throughout the year. Areas that are particularly sought after are IT and engineering. Several tertiary systems around the world build internships into courses either as a course requirement or as an academically credited option. Whether the student needs it to get their qualification or they simply choose to do one, their tertiary systems and Governments make it very clear to them that relevant work experience is crucial when it comes to the job hunt. In some countries they are required to do 3 internships and sometimes they must even be done overseas. Their institutes and Governments are very proactive and fund these experiences, often covering costs such as flights, accommodation and living expenses. The US Government for example aims to send half its tertiary population overseas at some point in their studies, whether that is for an internship, semester study, full degree study, volunteering, leadership development, short courses or some other programme.

When they choose to do their internship in New Zealand, Intern NZ comes into the picture. Intern NZ arranges the internship, provide airport meet and greets, accommodation services, events and emergency support. The students are usually in their final year of study or at postgraduate level. Most will come for around 4 months. Through post internship surveys of over 100 clients/interns, we estimate that for every student that comes the average dollar benefit to NZ is around $11000. That takes in how much they spend every week on food, accommodation and activities. It does not factor in their working hours. So far this year Intern NZ has added over 168,000 hours of internship hours into the New Zealand work force; helping businesses to grow and allowing students from around the world to fulfil academic requirements and the opportunity to fulfil their dream of visiting New Zealand.

On top of this is the business links that are generated in the future between their home country and New Zealand, many of them have their families come out and join them for a period, some come back for study and there are many more indirect advantages.
