Feds welcomes increase in biosecurity detector dog teams

Federated Farmers welcomes the Ministry of Primary Industries announcement that more detector dog teams are coming on board to help stop dangerous pests entering New Zealand.

“Stringent biosecurity practices and procedures are of the upmost importance to the New Zealand agriculture industry,” says Federated Farmers Biosecurity spokesperson Guy Wigley.

“It is paramount that we operate in a system that ensures harmful pests and diseases are kept out of New Zealand. A biosecurity breach of any magnitude has the potential to impede our ability to remain a productive part of the New Zealand economy .”

Mr. Wigley says it’s good to see the results of the government’s decision to increase biosecurity funding.
“Biosecurity is not just a concern for primary industries; our country benefits from both trade and travel and a lapse could result in a spread that severely affects the livelihoods of thousands.”

Federated Farmers reminds farmers that they also have an important role to play in New Zealand’s biosecurity by keeping watch for anything potentially exotic or unwanted.
