Consent changes means faster UFB installs for New Zealanders

InternetNZ welcomes today's announcement by the Government of improved access rules for the UltraFast Broadband fibre network as an important move in helping more New Zealanders get better Internet.

InternetNZ Chief Executive Jordan Carter says that the current consenting regime is holding too many people up from connecting to fibre, and usually for no better reason than simple miscommunication.

"Demand for fibre Internet connections is going through the roof, yet we've heard plenty of stories about frustrated New Zealanders who can't connect to fibre due to the inefficiencies of the current access regime," says Carter.

"We welcome the announcement from the Minister as it will mean that more New Zealanders will be able to enjoy the benefits of fibre connectivity faster."

InternetNZ submitted last year that the "deemed consent" style regime that has been announced today will likely resolve most of the current issues, so long as it is paired with a dispute resolution framework that allows resolution of particularly complicated cases.

"Today's announcement gets the balance right between property rights and improving connectivity, and we're pleased to see it finally happen," says Carter.
