Vacancies fall slightly in February – MBIE Jobs Online Report

The number of job vacancies fell slightly in February, while there was a 4.7 per cent increase over the year, according to the latest Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Jobs Online report.

Vacancy numbers fell by 0.5 per cent in February, with the largest decreases occurring in accounting, HR, legal and administration (down 1.2 per cent) and healthcare and medical (down 0.8 per cent). Industries that saw an increase in vacancies were construction and engineering (up 2.7 per cent), education and training (up 1.9 per cent) and hospitality and tourism (up 0.2 per cent).

Most occupation groups saw fewer job vacancies last month, particularly community and personal services (down 1.9 per cent) and sales (down 1.3 per cent).

Of the ten regions, six experienced an increase in vacancies in February. Northland and Otago/Southland both grew by 1.0 per cent and Gisborne/Hawke’s Bay by 0.8 per cent.
Vacancies in Canterbury fell by 1.0 per cent in February, and by 6.8 per cent over the year.

MBIE’s Labour Market Trends Manager, David Paterson says, “The small changes in the number of vacancies across industries, skills and occupations echo the slight downshift in business confidence last month.”
