New Christchurch restaurant/bar Bishop Brothers Public House

New Christchurch restaurant/bar Bishop Brothers Public House

Riffing on the 50s retro rustic cool of Bishopdale’s famous orchards and the three brothers (James, Robert and William) the suburb is named after, Bishop Brothers Public House is all about fantastic food in a relaxing atmosphere, says owner Mark Pearce.

“We’re looking to reignite a local passion for exceptional food and drinks with our new neighbourhood gastro tavern,” says Mark, a trained chef whose influence on the New Zealand hospitality scene spans the country, and includes the highly-regarded redevelopment of Blenheim’s Criterion Hotel.

With Mark taking his cues from the Bishop boys’ fruitful legacy, the transformation of the former Little Italy/Farrington Tavern site into Bishop Brothers Public House effortlessly blends the rustic charms of an apple packhouse aesthetic with 50’s diner chic. Funky booth seating meets solid wooden furniture and retro flourishes, including old valve radios and other similarly-aged artefacts to set the scene.

Elevating gastro pub fare to the next level is award-winning local chef Kathryn Ahu, whose hearty rustic menu includes gastro pub faves and Bishop Brothers’ unique take on classics, including their soon-to-be legendary platters, baked pork belly, steamed mussel pots, chargrilled venison Denver leg, chicken wing buckets, Bishop’s seafood stew and funked up Fush ‘n’ Chups – all perfect after a hard day in the orchard, or wherever else you put your hard day in! And with the ability to host and cater for large and small functions, Bishop Brothers Public House is the perfect location for after-work drinks, a clan gathering or a celebration with mates.

Whether you’re relaxing with a drink in their sunny courtyard from their curated selection of New Zealand and international wines, ciders, beers (including several craft beers) or a signature cocktail, celebrating or hosting an event in their private function room (complete with its own, private entrance) or enjoying an outstanding meal in their restaurant, you’ll be doing it in exceptional rustic style at Bishopdale’s finest gastro tavern.
Bishop Brothers Public House will be open early April, 9am – 1am Monday to Friday, and from 8am on weekends and public holidays.
