A Woman as Un Secretary-General – Its Time

A Woman as Un Secretary-General – Its Time

It’s well past time for the UN to be run by a woman says the New Zealand Federation of Business & Professional Women (BPW NZ).

“There’s been a man in charge of the United Nations for seventy years, its now time for a woman to take the reins,” says President Vicky Mee.

“Today’s news that New Zealand has nominated Helen Clark, former Prime Minister and current UN DP Administrator to run for the next UN Secretary-General acknowledges the fact that the world is ready for a woman in the UN’s top job.

“Half of the world’s population are women and yet we have very few women as leaders & decision-makers.

“Research tells us that increasing the number of women in leadership is good for business. More women in leadership and decision-making roles increases the bottom line.

“In fact, empowering women at all levels is good for business and gaining gender equality is seen by many to be the only way we will collectively meet the sustainable development goals.

“In the words of the current UN Secretary- General Ban ki Moon, empowering women is not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.

“BPW NZ hopes to see Ms Clark as UN Secretary-General and are pleased that the New Zealand Government saw the value in nominating her,” says Mrs Mee.
