Hellers wins prestigious EECA environmental award

Hellers is proud to be named as the winner of the high-profile Innovation Award at the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Awards.

New Zealand’s leading meat producer was honoured for its cutting edge Hot Water Heat Pump system at their Kaiapoi plant that recovers the ammonia discharge from the refrigeration system to heat the plant’s hot water needs.

The system was developed in conjunction with Active Refrigeration Ltd, who are sharing the spoils.

Hellers chief executive John McWhirter said that all Hellers and Active staff involved were extremely proud of their design but that the recognition from the EECA was a wonderful bonus.

“Winning this award is a wonderful boost for everyone at Hellers and Active,” said Mr McWhirter.

The winning design recycles enormous amounts of energy that would otherwise have been wasted.

The judges concluded that “a combination of intelligent engineering and practical application has achieved massive energy savings.”

“An excellent project that uses outstanding innovation,” said the judges.

Since work started in 2014, the cost of heating water is down by nearly 84%, hot water-related greenhouse gas emissions are down by 91%.

“On top of that we are saving $148,000 a year on energy costs,” said Mr McWhirter.

Mr McWhirter said that Hellers is the leading meat producer in the country because of its innovation across the organisation, both in its products and production.

“Because innovation is such a focus point for our company, this nomination means a lot to us.”
